How To Install Renofy

Fencer

A fencer installs, repairs, and replaces boundary fences, garden fences, and security fencing. From close-board and panel fencing to post and rail, trellis, and metal railings, they secure and define your property boundaries.

What does a fencer do?

Fencers handle all types of boundary and garden fencing, including:

  • Close-board (featherboard) fencing installation
  • Panel fencing supply and installation
  • Post and rail fencing (agricultural and decorative)
  • Picket fencing and low garden boundaries
  • Metal railing and palisade fencing
  • Trellis and screening installation
  • Fence repair and post replacement
  • Gate hanging (timber and metal)

Do fencers need qualifications?

Fencing is not a regulated trade and has no specific licensing requirements. However, experienced fencers understand boundary law, planning restrictions, and proper installation techniques that ensure longevity.

Fences up to 2 metres high do not usually require planning permission. Fences adjacent to a highway are limited to 1 metre. In conservation areas and for listed properties, additional restrictions may apply. The Fencing Contractors Association provides industry standards and a find-a-contractor service.

What to look for when hiring a fencer

When choosing a fencer, consider:

  • Boundary knowledge — A professional fencer will discuss boundary ownership and ensure the fence is installed on the correct side of the boundary line.
  • Post installation method — Concrete-set posts last significantly longer than simply driven posts in most soil types. Ask about the method.
  • Timber quality — Pressure-treated timber lasts much longer than dip-treated. Ask about timber treatment and expected lifespan.
  • Waste removal — Confirm whether old fence removal and disposal is included in the quote.
  • Guarantee — Look for a workmanship guarantee of at least 2–5 years.
