Glazier

A glazier cuts, installs, and replaces glass in windows, doors, conservatories, and specialist applications. From emergency glass replacement and double glazing upgrades to decorative glass and structural glazing, they work with glass in all its forms.

What does a glazier do?

Glaziers handle a wide range of glass installation and repair work, including:

  • Replacement sealed double and triple glazing units
  • Emergency glass replacement (broken windows, doors)
  • Glass balustrades and glass staircases
  • Structural glazing (glass roofs, walk-on glass)
  • Shower screens and glass enclosures
  • Mirrors and decorative glass installation
  • Secondary glazing installation
  • Safety glass and fire-rated glass installations

Is glazing work regulated?

Replacement glazing in existing window frames is regulated under Part L (conservation of fuel and power) of the Building Regulations. If a glazier replaces sealed units, the new glass must meet minimum thermal performance standards.

The FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) and CERTASS schemes allow registered installers to self-certify that their work complies with Building Regulations without involving Building Control. Work by non-registered installers requires a separate Building Control application and inspection. For replacement sealed units only, a specialist glazier can often carry out the work.

Glass used in critical locations (doors, low-level glazing, bathrooms) must comply with BS 6206 or BS EN 12600 safety glass standards.

What to look for when hiring a glazier

When choosing a glazier, consider:

  • FENSA or CERTASS registration — Enables self-certification of Building Regulations compliance for replacement glazing.
  • Emergency response — If you need urgent glass replacement, check response times and whether they offer temporary boarding.
  • Glass specification knowledge — A good glazier will advise on appropriate glass types (toughened, laminated, Low-E) for each application.
  • Guarantee — Sealed units should come with a minimum 5-year guarantee against misting (seal failure).
  • Insurance — Public liability insurance is essential when working with glass due to breakage and injury risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a glazier cost?

A replacement double glazed sealed unit costs £80–£200 per window depending on size. Emergency glass replacement costs £100–£300+ including call-out. A glass balustrade costs £250–£500 per linear metre. Structural glass panels (walk-on or roof) cost £500–£1,500+ per square metre installed.

How do I know if my double glazing has failed?

The most common sign is condensation or misting between the two panes of glass. This indicates the seal has failed, allowing moisture to enter. Failed sealed units reduce thermal efficiency and should be replaced. The frames can usually be retained — only the glass units need replacing.
